Moment of Meditation: Your Footstool (Psalm 110:1)
"The Lord says to my lord:
'Sit at My right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.'"
(Psalm 110:1)
We know what a footstool is used for. What does God mean here? The imagery here is militaristic in nature. In the Ancient Near East, it was customary at the end of a battle for the losing king to be thrown down face first at the feet of the winning king. The winning king would then step on the losing king’s neck. The losing king was literally made a footstool for the winning king.
We’ve been on both sides of this scene. Adam and Eve were conquered by a single temptation by Satan. His foot came crashing down across their necks as humanity's slavery to sin began. But God gives the promise: one of their descendants will crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). Satan thought he had won forever, but Jesus took everything that Satan had--even death--and conquered him completely.
Satan has been conquered by the Lord Jesus Christ. Satan has been thrown down from Heaven face first onto the ground as the footstool for the Savior's feet. Jesus has conquered every weapon in Satan's arsenal. And He has done it for you. Amen.
