Moment of Meditation: City on a Hill (Matthew 5:14)
"A city set on a hill cannot be hidden."
(Matthew 5:14)
In the ancient world, many cities were placed upon hills. Rome is known as the city on seven hills. Jerusalem was also built on seven hills. They were built on hills because they would be more easily defensible. It's harder to mount a siege going uphill than it is downhill.
Most of these great cities were also walled. You can't miss a city's wall if it's on top of a hill. You just can't miss it! That's the way Jesus wants your faith to be. He wants you to live your life so that no one can question that you're a Christian.
The word Christian means "little Christ". In your Baptism, you were called to be just like Him. In Confirmation vows, you promised to follow His example. His life, death and resurrection were a city set on a hill. Not just any hill, but the hill of Calvary. Faith and life are established on that hill. Live on that hill today. Amen.
