Moment of Meditation: Not the Least Stroke (Matthew 5:18)
[Jesus continued:] "For truly I say to you, until Heaven and earth shall pass away,
not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished."
(Matthew 5:18)
"For I, the LORD, do not change" (Malachi 3:6). The King James Version renders this verse as "one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Law." Not only can you not change the letter of the Law. You must make sure that all the i's are dotted and all the t's are crossed.
Why should all this care be taken? We're dealing with God's Word. What should be the most important thing in our life. After all, it is this Word that everything revolves around in the final judgment. As St. John sees in Revelation, "And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things that were written in the books, according to their deeds" (20:12).
John gives us great insight into the Final Judgment because those who believe in Jesus will NEVER be blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:5). Their names are written in that book in the blood of the Lamb. It cannot be erased. It can be crossed out through faithless living. By taking out the jots and tittles. Changing the letter of the Law because it doesn't suit you. It doesn't feel good. Did it feel good for Jesus to be nailed to the cross for YOUR sins? Amen.
