Moment of Meditation: Least in the Kingdom (Matthew 5:19)
[Jesus continued:] "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others,
shall be called least in the kingdom of Heaven."
(Matthew 5:19)
This verse provides a great contrast that many find uncomfortable. Jesus talks about there being people labeled "least" and "great". No one wants to be "least". Everyone wants to be "great". Throughout the Gospels, the disciples never argue about which one of them is the "least". They want to know who is "great" in the kingdom of God. Greatness is very much preferred in our fallen state.
But what is Jesus saying about these whom He calls "least in the kingdom of Heaven"? His brother, St. James, echoes Jesus' thought in his epistle, "Whoever keeps the whole Law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all" (2:10). Even the "least of these commandments", when broken, means that you have violated the whole Law. You cannot undo sin.
But Jesus doesn't leave you hanging. Jesus continues to hold the door of Heaven open for you. Even for a horrible sinner there is the opportunity for repentance. So Jesus is calling to you. Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, "O sinner, come home." Come and be the least in the kingdom. Repent and be forgiven. Amen.
