Moment of Meditation: Deliver Us (Matthew 6:13)
From evil, Lord, deliver us;
the times and days are perilous.
Redeem us from eternal death,
and, when we yield our dying breath,
console us, grant us calm release,
and take our souls to You in peace.
(LSB #766.8)
In the final petition of the Lord's Prayer, Jesus encourages us to pray for the hope of all creation. We seek to be delivered from eternal death.
Eternal death is the eternal torment and condemnation in the fiery pit of Hell. No one wants to spend eternity in Hell. Many so-called Christian pastors and theologians have outright denied the existence of Hell. Where we can agree with these misguided souls is that God does not want anyone to go to Hell. God did not create Hell for people. God created Hell for the devil and his angels.
We seek peace in life. We seek peace in death. Peace is the knowledge of God's compassionate mercy given to them so that you might spend eternity in Heaven. This is the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Peace that is eternity in glory. Amen.
