163 - with The Urban Archeologist, Greg Van Antwerp
Today, on our episode of the No Labels, No Limits podcast we interview Greg Van Antwerp. I hope you enjoy today’s conversation as much as I did! I had the pleasure of meeting Greg through a mutual friend and super-star storyteller Ken Fay.
I was intrigued by his passion for “urban archeology” (a term he coined), and how shares his knowledge and learning to help people uncover the “golden nuggets and treasures” others leave behind.
Let me tell you a bit more about Greg. As you might expect from what I mentioned already, Greg is a historian, educator, finder of "things".
He has been searching antique and estate sales for almost his whole life. In 2009, Greg started blogging about his discoveries because he says what he enjoys most is to find a good story behind each item or the story of the original owners.
In 2013 he began a speakers tour and over the past 7 years visited libraries, historical societies, and community centers across New York and New England. At the end of the day, he aims to encourage everyone to follow his passion for discovery.
Greg says “History is hiding everywhere.” "With the digitization of everything, it is more important than ever to preserve the physical proof of the past", he says. “We have to find what’s out there and share it far and wide... for the edification of future generations.”
Some of Greg’s presentations have become How-To sessions for finding and preserving hidden history!
Greg is on the board of trustees of the New Milford Historical Society and currently writing a book on tips and tricks about how he
found some of his best discoveries. You can read more about his discoveries at www.foundastory.com
