Moment of Meditation: Stairway or Highway? (Matthew 7:13-14)
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few (Matthew 7:13-14).
Two of the greatest rock anthems ever written were Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell." While written quite independent of each other, they diverge from Jesus' talk of salvation at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
Salvation by works of the Law is a very tricky business. The gate to enter into eternal life is very narrow. The gate to enter into eternal death is very broad. It is very much like a staircase as opposed to a highway. The road that leads to destruction seems very pleasant. That's why we have such a problem with sin in our world today.
But the narrow gate is found at the end of a hard road. Even after a long life of sacrifice and suffering, the narrow gate is still only opened by faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Only by faith in Jesus will He open the gate that He unlocked in His resurrection. By faith you will enter into eternal paradise with Him. Amen.
