Could poo really be the antidote to an incurable mental illness? Sounds like a tough pill to swallow hey (they call them crapsules, actually) I mean who would even test such a theory anyway?
Jane Dudley, that’s who. She'd taken enough sh*t in life for the last 18 years. What's the harm in taking just a little more, she thought.
I stumbled across Jane as I searched for someone to speak with me on the topic of FMT (fecal microbiota transplant). Someone to talk sh*t with me. Literal sh*t… But when I found out that FMT was effective for treating Jane’s Bipolar 1 disorder I nearly fell off my stool (witty, aren't I just).
Jane suffered severe Bipolar 1 symptoms for 18 years since the age of 16. Functionally disabling depression with occasional bouts of dangerous psychosis. Attempting suicide multiple times (something she wasn't all too talented at, fortunately), Jane was thrown into psychiatric wards over a dozen times. Admitting that together with her partner, Alex she had begun to open the conversation around how to perhaps end her life without Alex going to jail, should they continue to fall short of finding some relief Jane's suffering. Little did they know, the answer was right there… they were literally sitting on it!
Jane went to work with DIY (yep, that's do-it-yourself) Fecal Microbiota Transplants at home after acquiring sufficient clinical research papers and evidence to feel she understood the process and safe execution. (Dear listener, I feel we must say ‘please don’t try this at home’... I also feel it's unlikely I need to say it!)
Four years symptom free and three years medication free, (simply unheard of) Jane is the first in the world. There are 8 such cases of success and clinical trials underway, in which Jane in getting heavily involved. The world of gut health and it's relationship with our mental health is still so young and not yet well understood and in many area's clinically proven, but something worth taking into consideration. I mean let's be honest... we've been saying 'we are what we eat' for years. So it kind of makes sense.
Next time someone tells you to 'stick it up your bum', maybe it's better advice than they think!
Enjoy...
