Immigrant Doctors in the History of Canadian Medicare

Greg Marchildon interviews Sasha Mullally on the book she co-wrote with David Wright entitled Foreign Practices: Immigrant Doctors and the History of Canadian Medicare published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 2020. Professor Mullally’s book is the culmination of many years of research on the history of medicine in Canada. This books reveals Canada’s dependence on immigrant doctors in establishing medicare despite the concerns that some had – particularly the refugees from the National Health Service in Britain who were particularly hostile to state involvement in medical care. She also recounts the stories of other physicians from Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa and their challenges getting established and working in rural and remote communities.
