We're shrinking heads in 2021. For the first double feature of the year we have clinical psychologist, filmmaker, and professor Jan Haaken discussing the horrors of the body, the bonds that form family, and stuff that looks like buttholes in Sea Fever and Relic - both 2020 movies with female directors. You love to see it, folks.
Check out our guest Jan Haaken at https://www.jhaaken.com/, where you can find her films, books, and projects.
Jan Haaken is professor emeritus of psychology at Portland State University, a clinical psychologist and documentary filmmaker. From refugee camps, abortion clinics, war zones, and mental hospitals to drag bars, dairy farms and hip-hop clubs, Haaken’s documentaries focus on people and places on the social margins, drawing out their insights on the world around them. Her documentaries center on labor carried out in liminal spaces and on difficult jobs that are not well understood. Haaken has taught film theory at Portland State University and consulted on documentary and visual storytelling as a Fulbright scholar at Durham University (UK) and University College Cork(Ireland) and as a visiting professor at London School of Economics (UK), YorkUniversity (UK), and University of Michigan Ann Arbor. She is a member of FilmFatales—a national organization of recognized female film directors and has received numerous awards for her filmmaking, most recently the Lena Sharpe Persistence of Vision award at the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival. In addition to a series of shorts, Haaken has directed six feature-length films, including Queens of Heart (2006) Guilty Except for Insanity (2009),Mind Zone: Therapists Behind the Front Lines (2014), MilkMen: The Life and Times of Dairy Farmers (2016), Our Bodies Our Doctors (2019), and Necessity: Oil,Water and Climate Resistance—(not yet released).
