Novelist and teacher Kimberley Starr’s crime novel Torched explores how far a mother will go to save her offspring, In his case the plot is set around a bushfire in a fictional town in the Yarra Valley, on the outskirts of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
Phoebe is the principal of the town’s tiny school and when her teenage son Caleb is accused of starting a bushfire that kills 12 people she is thrust into a nightmare where she’s trying to protect her boy from an angry community and possible lengthy jail sentence and make her own investigations into what really happened. Could her son have done what he’s accused of?
