Rising up For Kids with Learning Disabilities with Gia Gambino
Did you know that 1 in 5 children in the U.S. have learning disabilities like dyslexia? These disabilities have nothing to do with intelligence and yet, students often struggle in school because they fail to get the support they need. Gia Gambino grew up having dyslexia. By middle school, Gia had overcome many of her reading challenges. But, she still had a hard time recognizing her skills.
Gia worked hard on herself and slowly became more confident in her ability to speak up on things that mattered to her. In 2020, Gia participated in "Call For Kindness" a national competition from nonprofit organization Riley's Way Foundation, which awards grants to teen-led projects that inspire kindness, strengthen communities, and bring people together. Gia's submission involved Rise, a youth-led project she founded to support students with learning differences and their parents. In this episode, we hear Gia's story of resilience and determination to create inclusive environments, while also tackling pressing societal topics like understanding privilege and changing the narrative around immigration.
