Christ didn’t have to suffer for his sins because he had none. Christ did not even have to suffer for our sins. He could have left us in the grip of the unmerciful law of justice. His suffering and death for us can only be attributed to two things— (1) His pure love for the Father, which is illustrated by his obedience. Everything Christ did, he did because it was the will of the Father. And (2) His pure love for us, which is called charity or the pure love of Christ. It was Christ who instituted the Law of Mercy.
