Modern Christians put nearly all their confidence in individuals of great notable degrees in theological sciences. Their information and multi-syllabled words give an air of spiritual attainment of power, knowledge and understanding into the word of God. These scholars become god-like in knowledge to many. Therefore their learned pedigrees dominate the simple who are searching, growing and learning.
There are other believers who love the purity and simplicity of the word. They take it in its fullest, literal meaning, staking their whole hearts and eternal lives on it. They are not interested in the lettered men, but in the Lord, in powerful, steadfast faith. "Once He hath spoken shall He not do it?" is the stamp upon their hearts.
Over the vast millennia there were no scholars and doctors of theology. People did not own Bibles, they owned their unshakeable faith to their deaths. They might have had a couple of missionaries who showed up on foot to their little villages to proclaim the gospel of salvation. These missionaries would remain there for a while until they knew the people understood the gospel and felt confident in their new found faith in Christ. Then they left to other parts of the countries spreading God's great light.
Time progressed into people being allowed to own Bibles which were a household treasure, and thousands lost their lives for it under the brutal Inquisition. Time marched on again until this present time where now there are hundreds of versions of the Bible in the English language alone. Modern textual critics argue that the word is fallible, not inspired and preserved by the miraculous hand of God. Instead they continue to look for any hidden divine evidences in the already printed word of God. They "stumble on the stumbling stone."
As I write this, there are over four million people without power in seventeen states that are in record breaking, historic sub zero weather. The elderly having no power for their oxygen machines. People are dying being frozen to death. I heard that a whole family of four died last night. They were found in their car all passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning trying to keep warm. People starving and livestock are perishing and more.
I thought of these people all night and in the morning I thought about the chapter in James about "faith by works." "For He shall do exceedingly, abundantly, beyond all that you can ask or think according the power that worketh within you." What power? The power of believing by faith in the vehicle of prayer to the Faithful God Jesus Christ. Really, when it all boils down to it, none of that higher learning and doctorly wisdom helps anyone, not even them. Jesus Christ is the helper, the Savior, the Deliverer. "He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him" by raw, simple faith.
None of these people right now are thinking about any theological debates and sciences. Instead, I would picture certain of them who own whole libraries of these books using them for kindling to keep their families warm and alive. In the end, they have no better purpose. Remember that the One who inspired the Bible is the One who preserves it and you for His namesake. He is the preserver of life. He will answer us in prayer, for "He has never forsaken them that seek Him." Amen.
