In the readings from today, we learn why we fast. Isaiah 58 has a list of all the things that are pleasing to the Lord when we fast: clothe the naked children, shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, set free the oppressed. Psalm 51 reminds us that God will not spurn a contrite and humble heart. And in Matthew 9, Jesus reminds the disciples that while he’s with them they’re not going to fast but when he leaves they will. Why do we fast? So that we can call on the Lord, and He will answer
