Nancy Guzha sharing on her experiences as 3rd Generation Zimbabwean (African) Family Business Member as shared at the African Family Firms 2021 1st Annual African Women In Family Business.
About: Nancy Tawengwa Guzha is a seasoned General Manager, specializing in growing companies, particularly turning around struggling organizations. Trained as an agricultural economist, Nancy’s career has largely been spent in marketing and sales.
Nancy was born into one of Zimbabwe’s most well known business families with her grandfather, George Tawengwa, being lauded as Zimbabwe’s first Black millionaire, whilst her parents, Solomon and Victoria, went on to start their own companies, of which Nancy and her siblings are now the shareholders and directors.
Nancy joined Unilever after graduation and rose to become the first woman Managing Director of Unilever Zimbabwe and, eventually, the first woman Vice President of Unilever Southern Africa. During this time, she won National Businesswoman of the Year twice as the market recognized her achievements in transforming the organization. Nancy left Unilever to join Cairns Holdings as CEO in October 2015 with a mandate to return the company to profit, drive competitive growth and put in place a performance-driven team, all of which she achieved before leaving the Group in 2019 to embark on a completely new venture, running an earthmoving and construction company, Syndicated Resources. She remains involved in the FMCG world as a shareholder.
Nancy has a BTEC in Land Based Industries (Harper Adams University, UK), a BSc. (Hons) in Agricultural Economics and Management (Reading University, UK) and various other management/leadership courses, including Women’s Leadership (Insead, Singapore campus).
Nancy has sat on several Boards, most notably Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA) as Deputy Chairperson, Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and Black Crystal Environmental Consulting.
Nancy firmly believes that all men are self-made, and is in the process of daily moulding who she wants to be.
