Early preparation for calving time is key to identify preventable losses. Good handling facilities make it easy to check calving cows if you think there may be a problem. Plenty of bedding, clean pens, clean gates, iodine on navels are all good hygiene practices which can help minimise risk of disease to new-born calves. Hugh Thomson, a Clinical Director at Seafield Vet Group, highlights the key period for a calf: 3 weeks prior to calving, 3 weeks post calving – if the calf comes through this period successfully then you are off to a good start. Ewan Gordon of Wellheads Farm, believes colostrum and antibody passover are vital during this key period to ensure a successful calf crop. Listen now as Hugh and Ewan discuss preparations for calving time starting with taking a look back at last years records.
