Equal parts disorienting and heartbreaking, "The Father" takes a familiar narrative of caring for an aging parent and turns it into a firsthand experience of dementia. Olivia Colman proves there is no limit to the power of her frown, giving an economical and brilliant performance as the put-upon Anne. But Anthony Hopkins totally runs away with this movie, and any other year would take every award with him, in what may be one of the best male performances either of us have ever seen. Imogen Poots, Olivia Williams, Rufus Sewell and Mark Gatiss shine in supporting roles, Florian Zeller deserves so much praise as both the original playwright and the film's director, and we can't help but imagine the actresses who would take on the alternate reality role of "The Mother."
