Is the ‘Bradford Factor’ for Managing Sick Leave Coming to a Workplace Near You!

Hi Everyone

We hope you’re having a positive employment rights week.

This week, we’re looking at a sickness monitoring system called the Bradford Factor or the Bradford Formula, which is a system used by some companies to monitor levels of sick leave, but also to monitor the impact or disruption of short, frequent and unplanned sick leave  on a company’s business. The aim is to show that shorter bouts of sick leave by employees, has much higher disruption levels than people taking longer periods of sick leave away from work.

The formula for working out your attendance score is:

Number of sickness spells away from work x the same number (e.g. 2 separate spells of sickness from work would be written as 2x2)

The total number of days of sick is then multiplied by the sickness spell number (e.g. 7 days of sick leave across the 2 spells, would be written as 2 x 2 x 7)
