Beware of the Upsell With ED Treatments: Why You Should Start with a Urologist For Bigger, Better And More Educated Results
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about the difference between focused linear compression therapy and shockwave therapy, which treatment might be right for his erectile dysfunction, and how to know which practice offers the highest quality options. Dr. Mistry cautions this listener that any medical practitioner advertising their treatments as "the best" is unethical and can be highly manipulative when something as important as patient health is at stake. In addition, he urges this patient to find a doctor who will give him a thorough evaluation before selling him on any therapeutic tool or process. In this case, that would involve a review of his medical history, medication regimen, lifestyle choices, and other complicating factors that might be contributing to the symptoms he's experiencing (ED). Only then should he be willing to pay out for expensive therapies, some of which aren't even guaranteed. Regarding the difference between focused linear compression and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU or "shockwave" or "sparkwave" therapy), Dr. Mistry finds shockwave to be the more effective tool for treating ED. Regardless of your symptoms, your doctor should be willing to try more modest interventions (like lifestyle modifications and/or supplements, medications) before upselling you on the "latest and greatest" procedure. Dr. Mistry and his partners at NAU Urology Specialists are also big fans of the second opinion, so if you're ever unsure about a treatment or procedure you've been offered, please give us a call and we'd be happy to see you!
