Episode 109 - The Lasting Impact of the Showtime Lakers with Michael Cooper
On this episode, we hit rewind and travel back to the Showtime Era. One of the essential members of that iconic squad, 5-time champion and 8-time all defensive teamer, Michael Cooper takes us through exactly what made that team so special. Looking at the impact their style of play had on the game, we can appreciate how so much of the modern era was influenced by Showtime.
For Gil, it was the substance and the strategy that Pat Riley unleashed with Magic at the point. Not only did Magic revolutionize the position, his rivalry with Larry Bird and Boston defined the era. As Coop tells us, the Celtics were the ultimate opponent and the dynasty was only successful because everyone on the team bought and supported each other. It truly was a special chapter in NBA history, and as we see where the game has come from Showtime roots, we should appreciate it even more.
