It's OK if they need a break from you. Try your best to not take it personally. Respecting this is huge and it will show them that you get it (or at least you are trying to)
Try open-ended questions. Ex: "On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the BEST day ever, how was today? Why that number?
Embrace car rides. Kids can really open up when sitting by your side.
If he is "techy" then ask him for some tech help
Watch his favorite youtube videos or show. Maybe ask him to help you better understand his fave game
Help him clean his room (without nagging or lecturing, just to help out. You might be surprised at some of the memories you’ll share).
Ask: Do you want my advice or do you want me to listen?
Give them opportunities to shine. Set them up for success
