OPC 017: Combating the Cravings that Drive Self-Soothing
In early sobriety, it’s common to experience cravings. No matter if it’s cravings for alcohol, drugs, or food, it’s likely that we’ve all experienced them, and even more likely we’ll experience them again.
However, what exactly does having a craving mean? In the same sense that most of us used drugs, alcohol, or other mind-altering substances, when we experience cravings, we can ask ourselves if we’re trying to soothe, numb, or escape an uncomfortable situation or event in our present or past lives.
In this week’s Omar Pinto Coaching Podcast, the group helped Travis. Dealing with cravings for food and video games, he finds himself uncomfortable in his sobriety while trusting the process of recovery. The coaching group guides him back to a significant event in childhood when he first felt abandoned and betrayed by his parents and put his trust in substances. Finding himself escaping the uncomfortability of putting trust in the recovery process, the group guides him through an exercise to begin working on these negative patterns to ultimately seek freedom and find purpose.
