Patients or Insurance Companies: Who Do You Really Work For?
In this 'sode, we get fired up about the state of our industry and discuss what we 1) do for patients and 2) do for insurance companies. When we really think about it, we'll be shocked by how much of our day-to-day is dictated by insurance companies and not what is best for patients.
We can't serve two masters.
We start with recognizing and saying out loud that insurance companies do not have our patients best interests at heart. They have their own bottom line to serve.
The relationship with insurance companies is almost like an abusive relationship. They deny a claim and we feel like it's somehow our fault. We didn't document right, or we could write a new progress note or help with an appeal.
The truth? When they deny a claim, they make more money.
This is the state of our profession - now we just need to decide what to do about it. We lay out the three options each of us have. There's no one right answer, but we need to go into our choices with our eyes wide open.
