Whether you have a loved one that is sober, in recovery yourself, or are watching someone struggle with addiction, one of the biggest components of recovery is learning how to support and restore our relationships with our loved ones. The best way for us to be there and help others is to ultimately work on ourselves.
In today’s Omar Pinto Coaching Podcast, the group helped Wendy. In recovery herself, her children have also struggled with addiction. Now that her children are grown and have moved out of the house, she feels a combination of emptiness and guilt. What was once days filled with school, extracurricular activities, and carpooling, are now days of emptiness and sadness in acknowledgement that her primary purpose as a mother is not what it once was. Wendy also feels guilt regarding her children’s addiction issues and doesn’t feel “good enough,” as a mother and feels the need to compensate by using control out of fear.
The Recovery Coaching group took Wendy back to childhood to a place when she began being self-critical. What was once a silent message of not feeling, “good enough,” became a journey of turning into someone she thought she should be for her mother, father, and family, ultimately, abandoning herself.
