Let’s talk about what can be one of the most difficult parts about our teens turning 18. I believe for some parents it is letting go, letting go of our role. Saying goodbye to being their mother in that sense or form. It can be difficult letting go of the child and embracing the adult.
We can decide to let go and become the bystander and supporter our teens need on their next chapter of their lives. We have written all the guidelines needed for the past eighteen years, and now it’s their turn to use this guidebook (or not) as they endeavour to live their lives to the best of their ability.
We have to trust that we did what we could with what we were given and the rest is up to them now. We get to have faith in them. This is crucial for their self esteem and their ability to make choices.
Teaching them that no matter what happens your love is unconditional, without any IF’s, and that their choices does not reflect their worth and neither does it reflect your parenting. Whatever their choices may be, it’ll all be for their growth and betterment.
Let’s go over some tools that will empower your as a parent as well as empower your teen as they use their newfound freedom.
