Therapists Are People Too (T.A.P.T.)
Health & Fitness:Mental Health
Season 4 Ep 5 Can We Really Strengthen Our Resilience?
In this week's episode, we discuss resiliency. We share our experiences with the term in regards to our clients and our personal lives.
Key takeaways from this episode:
1. Some people are born with an innate resilience ability. Whereas others have to "do the work" to cultivate a practice of staying with unwanted feelings to better understand them and to create meaning of adversity.
2. The word resilience has become a popular term that is often overused or misused. Some people have adverse feelings or reactions to the word because it can be used as a way to minimize people's hardships or experiences.
3. The universe often tests us with situations that push us to use our resiliency or gives us an opportunity to cultivate it.
4. Believing other possibilities exist and getting out of a victim mentality can push us towards using our resilience. Leaning on our tribe and therapy can be enormously helpful in getting through adversity. Resilience doesn't mean you have to do everything alone.
5. Building up armor and "bouncing back" can seem like someone is resilient but until you sit with the unwanted feelings and face them it will be hard to fully thrive.
6. Our spirits can become fatigued at times. Having self-awareness allows us to be conscious of when that happens. Accepting what you can control and what you cannot is important. Leaning on spiritual practices can help us find meaning and gratitude.
7. Everyone is in a different place. Don't provide unsolicited advice on how you got through something. If someone asks, great. But let people have their own process.
