Many times when people are suffering long in trials, they try to keep themselves lifted up. The first act of suffering is to pray, and spend more time in prayer. The believer may tell those around them about their suffering, but they try to keep a happy look on their faces. They are trying to show the Lord, the world and the enemy that they will not succumb to the suffering. However, when suffering becomes long, it has a way of wearing out the heartiest of believers.
The longer it goes, the weaker they feel, and the more unable they are to pray. Not that they have no faith or stopped believing, but suffering has a breakdown in the human body, soul then spirit. It quenches the spirit, and once that happens, all forms of "trying" to keep oneself lifted up are gone. Then they feel ashamed, and begin to sink into thoughts and feelings they never experienced before. Feelings that God has abandoned them because they cannot pray like they use to. They feel that they must have done something to deserve it, and that God is now disappointed with them. They pray like before, but they avoid what God wants them to say.
They fear that if they really let it out to Him how they really feel about what is happening to them, it will be the final straw with God. Because of this fear of going to Him and allowing themselves to pour out their hearts to God, they go around with chains of sorrow like slaves in the dark. What God wants for them is to throw down all their spiritual scaffoldings, and stop trying to look, act and sound with a certain quasi-Christian-joy. He wants them to come into His presence and let it all come out, ALL of it. This is the only way to get free. Do not be afraid to let it all hang out so to speak with God, He wants you to get it out so He can receive it, and change your life. Go to Him now, His door is open and "the King is held in His galleries."
