EPISODE 46- Language Barriers as Asian Americans
"But aren't you Chinese? Shouldn't you know how to speak your own language?" For some of us, especially Asians who are third generation or later, we did not grow up speaking our native language, or we may have forgotten it or even rejected it growing up in order to get by in America. What we didn't realize as kids was how far it would make us feel from our culture. Because language is such a big part of any culture, it is painful when we can't speak with our relatives or our other Asian peers because it makes us feel as if we are not Asian enough. In this episode of Asian Girl In A Wester World, Lulu and Yaya catch up with one another and talk about their struggles with not speaking their native language, the barriers in communication that are embedded in cultural hierarchy, and our how it feels to feel like you're failing at being both Asian and American at the same time.
