Ep 11 – Haunted Boozy Places Pt. 1: Kings Tavern + the Hat Man
In King’s Tavern in Natchez, Mississippi, doors open and close on their own, glass breaks, tables vibrate, bare footprints appear on mopped floors, and apparitions will manifest on the stairs or behind you in the mirror.
These hauntings are explained by a story that the first owner’s wife killed his mistress, Madeline, in the early 1800s and hid her body among others in the fireplace. Customers and employees that see Madeline in the tavern say she’s the one behind the hauntings. The only problem is that Madeline never existed.
So who—or what—is behind these hauntings? In addition to the ghost of a young woman, people also see a large man in a top hat who they believe has sinister intentions. Could this be the Hat Man, the evil, shadow-like figure people all across the globe have seen?
No matter what, there’s something sinister there. In this episode, Robin and Zoey take a deep-dive into the lore of the Hat Man and hauntings in general as they try and figure out what’s going on in King’s Tavern.
But first, Robin & Zoey talk about their favorite hiking destinations in Something Southern: Roan Mountain in eastern Tennessee and Harbison State Forest in good ol’ Columbia, South Carolina!
