Ever since he started shooting home movies with his family's bulky video camera, Jon M. Chu knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. But after early success in Hollywood, having directed several big-budget features including G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Now You See Me 2, Jon realized he felt uninspired by the projects he was bringing to the silver screen. Inspired by a growing campaign to feature more Asian actors and creators on-and-off screen, Jon decided to use his influence to cast and direct 2018's Crazy Rich Asians, the first Hollywood film with a majority Asian cast in 25 years. Fueled by a fervent grass-roots campaign, Crazy Rich Asians went on to be the most successful romantic comedy of the 2010s. We featured Jon M. Chu in TED Radio Hour's recent episode The Artist's Voice. With the premiere of his latest movie In The Heights, wanted to share a special extended cut of his interview with Manoush.
