According to Buddhist principles, the “monkey mind” or "monkey brain" is a term that refers to being unsettled, restless, or confused. ... It is also the part of your brain that is alert for any danger.
The "monkey brain" is neither bad or good. This is when we get to decide the role we are going to assign the "monkey brain" to either let it be in control of our lives, with fear, hopelessness, and anxiety, or to only do its one job and warn us of danger. When we receive those warnings, this is where we get to assess and make a decision with or prefrontal cortex, based on what will serve us best.
The "monkey brain" sends us a warning message, we believe the message and we feed it and when we feed it, it becomes reality and our perception changes. We only see what we are focused on.
All this because the "monkey brain" has been in charge all along. Our brains are programmed to see what’s wrong, therefore, that’s what it’s always looking for. It finds negative thoughts that create negative emotions, which is the opposite of self confidence. If we have 9 out of 10 positive things, we spend all our energy on the one negative aspect and forget all about the other 9.
We cannot block our thoughts and emotions… they are simply going to always be there. Which ones we choose to obey, believe or listen to is what makes a huge difference. This is where our agency lies in the thoughts we choose. The master we choose to listen to.
The key is to learn to question all those thoughts and beliefs. Ask yourself: "What's the worst that can happen? Is this true? Can I find evidence of its opposite? Is this going to be for the best?"
We are in control! We decide what are the thoughts that will give us the result we want. If we are not seeing the results we want, it’s because we are not having the thought that is conducive to that result or action.
