One of the greatest gifts of the atonement is the institution of the principle of repentance, but what is repentance without forgiveness? Hate binds us to our enemies; forgiveness undoes the power Satan has over us. Though only Christ can forgive sins, only we can forgive ourselves or our enemies. Even in forgiveness agency is preserved. When Christ asked us to forgive our enemies seventy times seven, he wasn’t asking us to forgive their sins. He was asking us to pardon them for their trespasses against us so that he could forgive us for our trespasses against him. We pardon for time; Christ forgives us for eternity. The courage to forgive others calls forth the divinity that is within us.
