Living in Light of the Day of the LORD – 2 Peter 3:1-18
Perspective is an important aspect of life. It dictates how we approach issues and how we go about our lives, yet often times, we do not take time to analyze what it is we really believe or what our driving force really is. The Apostle Peter is seen in his two epistles to bring out strongly what the key beliefs and tenets of Christianity are, strengthening the believers to nurture and maintain godly belief and conduct.
In the last chapter of the second letter, Peter addresses the teaching on the day of the LORD more directly. This is a subject he alluded to numerous times in his two letters. For instance, in 1 Pet 4:7 he says that, “The end of all things is near. Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray”. Similarly in 2 Pet 2:9 he said, “... the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgement”. These verses are seen to bring out the fact that the end of things and the impending judgement of the wicked associated with the day of the LORD is imminent. This certainly echoes the words of Christ to His disciples especially in Matthew 24 and 25. Words that Peter had heard Jesus express and now had become a strong part of how he viewed life.
