God told Moses and Aaron what they would need to do to protect the Israelites from the final plague – the death of the firstborn son throughout the entire land of Egypt. These instructions marked the beginning of a new year for the people, a time that from then on was called the Passover.
Our Bible reading is from Exodus 12:21-32.
And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was dead.Exodus 12:30b
A statute is a law or decree made by a sovereign or government or by God. Moses tells the people that “You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever.” Every year after the first Passover, the Israelites would celebrate and remember Passover. They would remember the specific instructions God gave them for preparing the lamb to eat, to cover the doorways with blood and to be ready to leave Egypt. God freed them from their bondage of slavery to the Egyptians. And God does the same for us under Jesus’ blood.
