Pearl S. Buck nació en Estados Unidos en 1892 pero emigró a los pocos meses a China con sus padres, misioneros presbiterianos, donde pasó casi 40 años. Muchas de sus obras hacen referencia a China y a su cultura. En 1938 le concedieron el premio Nobel de Literatura. Publicó 'Viento del este, viento del oeste' en 1930.
