Moment of Meditation: What Is That to Us? (Matthew 27:3-4)
''Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself." (Matthew 27:3-4).''
After Judas betrayed Jesus, he tried to make it right. He tried to give the money back. But the chief priests didn't want it. "What is that to us? See to it yourself," they told him.
The chief priests had bought into the lie of self-righteousness. They tell Judas to work out his salvation. To pay for his own sins himself. There is no forgiveness there for him.
Self-righteousness is the natural religion of man. When we look back to Greek and Roman mythology, everyone had to make sure that the gods were on their side by constant sacrifices and worship.
Self-righteousness is nothing more than swimming in the stormy sea of your own doubt. Doubt is a hurricane that continues to swirl around you. Like it swirled around Judas as he threw the money down at the chief priests' feet before taking his own life.
The doubts of self-righteousness only lead to one destination: your soul's destruction. There is only one way to avoid that destination. Don't listen to the doubts. Don't try to save yourself. Throw yourself down at Jesus' feet. Beg for forgiveness. And He will give it to you. Amen.
