"Above Navel "Diastasis Recti and BMI as a measurement for health
Peter had an extra coffee this afternoon and it really shows.
He waffles, at a million words per minute, about "above navel diastasis recti". Basically this is where you do not have a gap below the belly button but you do above it.
This in response to a couple of emails about it this week where members with above navel DR had some questions;
Why do we/should we still work the lower part of the core when the gap is mainly above the bellybutton?
Should we treat above navel DR differently from below navel or open DR?
Can above navel be healed in the same way that open DR can?
etc.
Peter talks about all this and explains why a "well-thought-out" post-natal program will help with this whereas "diastasis safe" workouts are likely to make it worse rather than better and why a poorly thought-out post-natal program won't help it at all.
In the news this week; This article on the BBC. Essentially it's about a report from the Women and Equalities Committee. In it they urge the scrapping of BMI as a measurement which Peter believes is a mistake. The problem with BMI, as he sees it, is not with BMI as a measurement but with the people applying it as a strict measurement of health. Peter argues that BMI is a pretty decent indicator of expected health BUT that it just shouldn't be the sole one. So the problem is with the doctors/medical professionals applying it rather than the measurement itsself. He also argues that this incorrect application of BMI, and fake pictures on the internet, is responsible for a psychological problem with the measurement rather than the actual BMI tool.
