While millennials were already living at home in record numbers pre-pandemic, an unprecedented number of young people left their independent lives behind to move back into their childhood bedrooms in March of 2020. Many of these homecomings provided parents and children alike with a sense of safety and comfort, but–as always when it comes to family–there were new challenges to face: How do you slip back into the parent-child dynamic without regressing emotionally? Is there a way for both parents and children to re-establish boundaries? How do you know when it’s time to leave the nest again? Most importantly, with the cost of rent, homeownership, and childcare continuing to increase at an alarming rate, is it time to re-examine our definition of what it means to be an independent adult in 2021 and beyond?
