Moment of Meditation: Forsaken! (Matthew 27:46)
''And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46)''
Jesus was truly forsaken by both God and man. Hanging between Heaven and earth, He was truly alone. Suffering Hell's torment for you.
Being forsaken by God is to exist in Hell. Without the Light of God's presence. Always groping about in the flaming darkness. Weeping. Gnashing your teeth. Recoiling from the destroying worm that never dies (Isaiah 66:24; Mark 9:48).
This is Jesus on the cross in those three dark hours. He was forsaken so that you might be welcomed. Jesus atoned for your sin by taking your place. He suffered your torment. He did your time in Hell.
Because of this blessed exchange, you have the blessing of Heaven's gate open for you. It is open as long as you are a member of Christ's body, the Church. Do not forsake the Savior who was forsaken by God for you. Amen.
