Moment of Meditation: New Tomb (Matthew 27:59-60)
''And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away (Matthew 27:59-60).''
Joseph's faith in and reverence for Jesus is shown in his provisions for burial. Wrapping His body in a clean linen shroud. Placing His body into His own tomb. Joseph had this tomb cut out for himself and his family. But he gives it to Jesus. This is the tomb where Jesus rose from the dead. According to Church tradition, no one else was ever buried in that tomb.
On Good Friday, Joseph didn't know what he was doing at this point. But his burial gift is very symbolic for your life. Jesus was buried in Joseph's tomb. And Christians, through Baptism, are buried in Jesus' tomb.
Jesus died your death. He laid in your tomb. Borrowed it for three days so that He could give you everlasting life. Three days' rest exchanged for eternity. His death for your life.
Jesus borrows a tomb so that when He opens the tomb on Easter morning you may know that He has opened Heaven for you. Amen.
