AY Young is a producer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, and entrepreneur.
He is also the founder of the Battery Tour which is a music tour powered by renewable energy. He has performed over 800 gigs powered by renewable battery power and, through this and other fundraising, has provided clean energy to global communities that do not have reliable access to stable sources of power. He has also been named by the UN as one of its 17 Young World Leaders, one each for the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
It's fascinating listening to AY talk about his early influences and how he maintains a positive mindset, resilience and energy for negotiating with governmental and corporate institutions on what have become highly challenging and politicised sustainability issues.
As a former social intrapraneur, I feel the rollercoaster of emotions that AY is going through. It's a battle to make progress from comments such as "Wow, love your project, man, it's so awesome" to actual tangible action like funding and real participation.
It's a hard, hard battle. You have to be persistent, resilient, focussed, know your shit 1001%, hard nosed and be complete pain in the ass to the people whom you want to get on your side.
And have vision.
As Mos Def said: "Comfortable people do not become revolutionaries".
