54. Ben Bennett: Thriving As A Porn-Free Single

Welcome to episode #54!

Ben Bennett is 32 and single, living in victory over sexual sin, and leading a global movement bringing people into the freedom Christ paid for.

Underlying issues are easy to miss
Ben tried to white-knuckle his way out of his porn addiction for years on his own. Finally, when he pursued groups and let others into his battle, he was able to begin his journey to freedom. He spent more than 4.5 years in programs trying to understand his underlying issues. He learned how childhood trauma had affected him, how his brain had been rewired for addiction, and that porn was just a symptom of a hurting heart. After going through this process, he's now been free from porn, masturbation, and sexual fantasy for 6.5 years.

Sex and marriage aren't ultimate. God is
Having rock-solid convictions about what his beliefs are set up Ben for success over struggle. He learned that sex and marriage aren't ultimate, but that God is. He learned to pray to ask God to show him how He was meeting all of his emotional needs - including those he thought he'd only get from sex and marriage. In realizing that God was the ultimate satisfier and that God was already taking care of him as a single, He grew in his intimacy with Jesus and watched his desires become pure and holy.

God often uses our great pains to produce great purposes
Ben suffered from addiction and mental illness, stemming from immense childhood trauma. Once he got God's vision for his life and started impacting others, he realized that he could never go back to pornography. The price would be too high as it would get in the way of purpose and impact. God is using him to impact people with all sorts of hurts, addictions, and struggles - just like he had - so that they can know Christ powerfully and intimately as he does in his own life.
