027 Moving people out of institutional care and the importance of personalised care and property with Janet Richardson
In this epsiode Janet Richardson shares her experience of moving people with learning disabilities out of long term institutional care and the transformation she witnessed by placing people into their own homes with personalised care. Janet speaks passionatley about her experience and how she sees the future of specialist supported housing.
Janet has worked in supported housing for 35 years on the 2nd of June. She started off working for the Probation service trying to find suitable Houisng for young ex-offenders, and quickly moved into more specialist housing for customers with support needs including, complex behaviour, learning disabilities, autism, dementia, and physical disabilities. She has also managed sheltered accommodation.
Janet is considered a subject matter expert in Exempt Accommodation and developed a housing programme, for the closure of long stay psychiatric placements for patients with Learning Disabilities.
She has worked for three of the largest social landlords, Places for People, Anchor and Riverside and has just started in a new role as Head of Housing for YMCA North of England.
She is a passionate advocate for providing the right housing and support to enable tenants of all abilities to live as independent a life as possible.

Lisa Brown became a property investor after a long nursing career. She initially developed heritage properties and then a chance encounter led her to discover supported living. She realized this was a powerful way to invest in property while creating homes for people with a support need.
Lisa set about discovering why property investors struggle to let their properties to supported living providers and why providers struggle to find property to let. She has been educating people, raising awareness and working on solutions to this problem ever since. Lisa is the host of the Supported Living Property Podcast and YouTube channel and formed The Supported Living Property Facebook Group.
Lisa is founder of The Supported Living Property Network, a place for property investors and supported living providers to connect, build relationships and communicate about property they have available and/or need.
