Season 2 Podcast 17, What is Truth?
In this life the only reality is truth.
Let me say it another way. That which is subject to entropy and has an end is not truth. It is merely a decaying reminder of its former self. It is merely an illusion of reality, a foreshadowing, a personification of that which we might expect in the future.
Truth is not found in natural law. Truth is found in spiritual law. A lot of people would disagree with that statement. Natural law teaches us the realities of this world. Kick your toe against a stone if you have philosophical objections about reality. But this world has an end. Temporal law is tethered only to time. Truth is tethered to eternity. Only absolute values provide a context for truth.
Truth however, which comes from harsh experience sticks fast and endures beyond this life. That which comes smiling slides off and is discarded like yesterday’s fashions. But notice what I said. It isn’t the experience that is true. It is what you learned from the experience. That is what this journey we call life is about.
But truth is ageless. It existed before time, and it will continue to exist long after. Time is a mere footnote. We are here to learn the lessons of life and not just the facts of life.
Because of the law of agency, we may accept as much truth as we want and reject the rest. However, opinion has no power over truth, and opinion is no substitute for truth. Opinion is tied to perception which is always in flux. Truth is tied to light and law which is always constant. The greater the light, the greater the truth. Truth and light are absolute. I am speaking, of course, of the light of Christ.
Where there is light there is truth, where there is truth, there is law. That which is relative is not truth. If you consider each level of light a separate reality, then it can be said that the purpose of earth life is to choose our own reality or select our own level of truth and light. Obeying temporal laws shapes our temporal reality. Obeying spiritual laws shapes our eternal reality. Though we must care for our bodies and guard our possessions, we are here primarily to gain knowledge, to increase in intelligence, to gain faith and learn obedience to law.
We shape our own eternal destiny which will be distinguished not by levels of perfection, because perfection is perfection, but by levels of law, truth, power, and light. Law alone has power to perfect, to preserve, to govern, to protect, to justify, and to sanctify.
We determine our own eternal reality by the spiritual laws we obey. Understanding that everything is governed by a complete set of laws helps us better understand the ways of God.
When a crab is ready to expand, it leaves its protective shell and doubles its size at the expense of its own safety. On earth we are as vulnerable as a shell-less crab; however, we must not harden into personal philosophy and hide in caves. Our vulnerability allows us to expand until we comprehend the whole. While we are here, expanding into eternity, we are at our most vulnerable, subject to irregular and uncertain vicissitudes of life and swimming in a sea storm of temptations and meaningless distractions.
On earth we are preserved by the temporal laws we obey. We must know the laws of this world. Science does a brilliant job of teaching us temporal or natural laws; however, we are exalted and perfected only by the spiritual laws we obey. Temporal laws give us freedom, but only spiritual laws give us agency. Earth life gives us the opposition necessary to understand spiritual truth. To understand one thing well we must know its opposite. Without opposition there can be no knowledge.
