Reflecting on the example of St. Benedict of Nursia, Fr. Eric speaks about the importance of striking a balance between missionary zeal, and the need to be practical and flexible in seeking the conversion of others. Fr. Eric talks also about the significance of Jesus responding to the pride, ignorance and fear of the disciples at the Last Supper by washing their feet, making them priests, and giving them the Holy Eucharist.
In contrast to our inclination to deal with the persons entrusted to our care with anger, frustration and impatience, Fr. Eric speaks of how Christ continues to believe in the potential of the People of God to realize their vocation to greatness; and how the steady application of patience, kindness and suffering endurance can do wonders in terms of facilitating this particular end.
This homily was given originally on Holy Thursday.
