Sport Science careers aren't like your typical 9am-5pm jobs. Jobs are highly competitive, sought after and unfortunately not in high demand. That's why starting a career out in Sport Science is tough..
Upon finishing a Bachelor’s degree, there is no real pathway to employment, particularly in the elite sector. Many sport science graduates are often stuck at the end of their degree due to the limited opportunities available and the shear volume of sport science graduates that are pumped out of Australian universities alone. It's a difficult path to navigate, given university marketing is aimed at targeting students towards working in the elite sector, when in Australia, the jobs just aren't there.
As TRIAX is comprised of three sport science graduates, we know how hard it is to try and grind out a career straight out of university. You're often left with only two options after your Bachelors degree. You either go back to university and try and further your education through an Honours, Masters or PhD, or you try your luck with some more internships and pray that they lead you towards employment..
But sometimes it's hard to find an internship that is actually worth your time and provides you with as much value in return relative to your efforts. Then again, going down a Masters path isn't as exclusive as it used to be and now many have Masters degrees but no viable employment opportunities. Some sport science students will even abandon their initial career dreams by moving into more stable clinical roles such as Physiotherapy, osteopathy or clinical exercise physiology.
It's a tough spot - we get it. That's why our latest TRIAX180 debate is all about Sport Science internships vs Postgraduate study for successfully developing your sport science career.
