Calling All Cars, All Classes, Civil Liberties: Police encounters; Do it right and spread the word!
Hi guys,
Here is a 101 on how to deal with police encounters successfully. You're probably in your car. But all this works the same if you are in your apartment or house, too. Police are officers of the Court. That's why we call them "officers". So don't mess with the Court. You may end up there. You need the court to like you. But you can start with the officer. So let's chat. Not big deal. We all have these encounters and the rules are absolutely universal:
Be chill
Be kind and curious about the person of the officer; notice details that allow you to relate to them as a person.
So: Get them off the story of Find, Arrest and Help Convict
Again: Personalize the encounter, pay attention to the personal details of the officer as a person. Relate positively to these.
Never consent to searches. Ever.
Never submit to an interrogation--interview--without a lawyer present. You see,
Q: If you have been arrested: "We just want to ask you a few questions, and then you are free to go."
(No)
A: "Sure. Where's my attorney?"
That effectively ends the interrogation/interview.
Don't take the bait. One wrong word, and that's what they will go with. I know, you're innocent. That's not the point of the method. I'm sorry, that's our system. It often works well. But my concern is you. Do it right. You have the right to counsel (a lawyer). Use it always. They will provide one for free.
