The Knife and Keating: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Introduction. The Philosophy of Self-Defense. Is it Defensible?
Hi Ethicists and Philosophers of Social and Political Philosophy, and Introduction to Philosophy friends,
Here comes James Albert Keating, Master at Arms and an opportunity for reflection and adventure. We see an unusual but important account of self defense as an Ethical and Social imperative, and surprisingly, not based on the defensive use of guns, but the ancient tool, a knife. Frightening at first thought. While I do not endorse or deny the ideas here, they have a certain seemingly  intelligent, at least interesting, nature, to the broader topic of our status as individuals: When (under what circumstances) and how (by what method) is it ethical to defend oneself? What would (1) Utilitarians, (2) Rights Theorists and (3) Virtue Theorists have to say about this? My experience in being involved with the production of this documentary was surprising. Truth is, I was nervous. But only at first.
For our friends in Introduction to Philosophy: Are weapons the beginning of Transhumanism? We can't win without them, and they are extensions of our body, just as are contact lenses, glasses and even, arguably, this computer.
Enjoy this unusual, thought-provoking film.
