Social and Political/Ethics and Everyone else: The Dan Crenshaw Incident; How they turned off my Debit Card for a Week
The Crenshaw Incident:
To be clear: Crenshaw is a Representative, not a Senator. Who knew?
Dan Crenshaw?
Daniel Reed Crenshaw is an American politician and former United States Navy SEAL officer serving as the United States Representative for Texas's 2nd congressional district since 2019.
When asked by an old friend to contribute to this person’s campaign, I contributed $50.00 because he was an old friend. I really didn’t know anything about Dan Crenshaw--still don't-- except he was the “Pirate Guy” and reasonably well spoken.
The Bank, a prominent bank in the US based in Spain, and of Basque origin (North/Western Spain), turned off my debit card 2 months later because there was “suspicious activity” on it. What activity? As they explained, simply a one-time contribution to Representative Dan Crenshaw. An interesting incident. The social and political problems here are immense. As are the ethical ones. Should banks penalize contributions to mainstream political views and persons whom they find “suspicious"? How does this work in a democracy in general? Let's consider the application of the theories of John Rawls and Robert Nozick, both advocates of the liberty principle (everyone is as free as they can be as long as they do not use that freedom to take others' freedom away). Would they agree to penalizing debit card holders for perceived wrong think--in this case, Dan Crenshaw? Let’s start with the empirical (observed) facts and move forward from there.
Some mere pop-culture on Crenshaw, but enjoyable,
